An unpleasant smell coming from your kitchen sink can quickly spread through the room and make the entire kitchen feel unclean. Although the odour may be noticeable above the drain, the underlying cause is often hidden inside the waste pipe, trap or drainage system.
In many cases, a smelly kitchen sink is caused by food scraps, grease or bacteria accumulating inside the drain. However, persistent smells can also indicate a blockage, leaking pipe or problem with the plumbing trap.
The type of smell and the way your sink is behaving can provide useful clues about what is happening.
Small scraps of food can enter the drain while plates, pans and cooking utensils are being rinsed. Fats, oils and grease can also coat the inside of the pipe. As this material accumulates and begins to break down, it can produce an unpleasant rotten-food smell.
The problem may be worse when grease combines with coffee grounds, rice, pasta or other food waste to form a partial blockage. You might also notice that water is draining more slowly than usual.
Minor buildup may sometimes be improved by running hot water and dishwashing liquid through the drain. However, repeatedly pouring boiling water into the sink may not be suitable for every type of pipework, particularly some plastic plumbing systems.
Avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners without professional advice. These products may not remove the underlying blockage and can create additional risks when a plumber later needs to work on the drain.
Even when you are careful about what enters the sink, a thin layer of organic material can develop inside the drainpipe. This creates an environment in which odour-producing bacteria can grow.
The smell may be strongest when the sink has not been used overnight or when warm water first enters the drain.
Cleaning the sink bowl and strainer will not necessarily solve the problem because the source of the smell may be further inside the pipe. A plumber can properly clear the waste line when the odour continues returning despite regular cleaning.
The curved section of pipe underneath your sink is commonly referred to as a trap. It is designed to retain a small amount of water, creating a barrier between your kitchen and the gases inside the drainage system.
When the trap dries out, leaks or has been installed incorrectly, unpleasant drain or sewer odours may be able to enter the kitchen.
A dry trap is more likely when a sink has not been used for an extended period, such as in a vacant home, guest area or holiday property. Running the tap for a short time may refill the trap and stop the smell.
If the smell returns, check the cabinet beneath the sink for moisture, staining or damaged pipe connections. A leaking trap should be repaired rather than ignored, as ongoing moisture can damage cabinetry and encourage mould growth.
A sink that smells bad and drains slowly may have a partial blockage.
Water can still pass through a partially blocked pipe, which means the problem is not always immediately obvious. Over time, more debris can collect around the obstruction until the sink drains very slowly or stops draining altogether.
Other warning signs can include:
A plunger may help with a small blockage close to the sink opening. If the problem keeps returning, the obstruction may be deeper inside the drainage system and require professional equipment.
A strong sewage smell should not be dismissed as ordinary food buildup, particularly when it affects several drains around the home.
The cause could be a more substantial blockage, damaged pipe, faulty vent or plumbing connection that is allowing drain gases to escape. You may also notice toilets gurgling, water backing up or several fixtures draining slowly at the same time.
These symptoms require a plumber to investigate the drainage system and identify the location of the problem. Clearing only the kitchen sink may provide temporary relief without resolving the underlying issue.
Sometimes the smell is not coming directly from the drain.
A slow leak from a waste connection, water pipe or flexible hose can soak into the base of the cabinet. Damp timber, old food particles and mould can then create a musty smell that appears to be coming from the sink.
Remove stored items from beneath the sink and look for damp patches, swelling, discolouration or water droplets. You can also run the tap while checking the visible connections.
Do not continue tightening fittings if you are unsure which connection is leaking, as overtightening can damage components and make the leak worse.
Good habits can reduce the likelihood of smells and blockages developing.
Scrape food scraps into the bin or compost before washing dishes. Use a sink strainer to catch larger particles, and avoid pouring cooking oil or grease down the drain. Oils should be allowed to cool and then placed in a sealed container for disposal.
Regularly clean the sink strainer, plug and accessible areas around the drain opening. Paying attention to changes in drainage speed can also help you address a developing blockage before the sink becomes completely unusable.
It is time to call a plumber when:
